During the ceremony, Moana is nearly struck by a rogue purple thunderbolt from a storm that had mysteriously appeared above the village. In that moment, Moana meets Tautai Vasa, and sees a vision of her village and island being abandoned and overgrown. When she comes to afterwards and explains her vision, once the full story is explained, Moana decides she has to find Motufetu to save her family, people, and island from Nalo’s curse. Maui informs them to stay away from Matangi, but as he was about to leave, he sees Heihei and realizes that Moana is in danger. It fell to number six in its fifth weekend, due to competition from four new releases—Sing, Passengers, Why Him? Te Fiti, now fully restored and the curse lifted, believes that Maui is left to apologize for his actions, which he does. Maui, in return, is granted a new hook and flies off to meet with his villagers. Before leaving, Maui bids Moana farewell with a hug, thanking her for all she’s done.

She fought and outsmarted the pirates, managing to rescue Heihei where the two managed to escape and jump back onto their boat, with Heihei spitting out the Heart upon hitting the canoe’s mast. Later, when Ralph is falling from a tower and needs saving by the princesses, Moana causes water from a fountain to spiral upwards so that Elsa can freeze it into a slide to slow Ralph’s fall, saying « You’re Welcome » after saving him. After Moana had an argument with her father over sailing beyond the reef to find more fish, she was comforted by Pua who tried to convince her sail into the ocean to look for more fish. Moana was hesitant and wanted to commit to her people and duties, but ultimately decided to try sailing to look for fish with Pua accompanying her. However, due to Moana sailing for the first time, their attempt to look for fish failed when they got hit by a wave, causing Pua to fall overboard.

Moana, now a teenager, has the responsibility of becoming the next chief of the island as her father insists, but due to her close friendship with her grandmother, Gramma Tala, she keeps her dream of leaving the island alive. She soon discovers that all the fish have disappeared from the shores of the village, and the coconuts have spoiled. Moana insists on going beyond the Moana reef to catch more, but her father dismisses her request, angered by her wishes.
Upon being unable to find Te Fiti, Moana realizes Te Kā is Te Fiti, but corrupted without her heart. The ocean clears a path for Moana, allowing her to return the heart to Te Fiti, who heals the ocean and islands of blight. Maui apologizes to Te Fiti, who fixes his hook as well as Moana’s boat before falling into a deep sleep and becoming an island. Gramma Tala finds Moana on the beach after she tries to sail past the reef only to become shipwrecked back home and shows Moana a secret cave hidden behind a waterfall. Tala then gives Moana the heart of Te Fiti after showing her the curse of draining life away from trees and the island itself, saying that it is the only way to save her people.

When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in hopes of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. Unwilling to lose his hook in another confrontation, Maui abandons a tearful Moana who asks the ocean to find someone else to restore the heart and loses hope. The ocean obliges and takes the heart, Moana breaks down crying feeling hopeless but Tala’s spirit appears, inspiring Moana to find her true calling. Maui returns, having had a change of heart, and buys Moana time to reach Te Fiti by fighting Te Kā, destroying his hook in the process. Moana discovers Te Fiti is missing, and realizes Te Kā is Te Fiti, corrupted without her heart. Moana tells the ocean to clear a path, allowing her to return Te Fiti’s heart, and the restored goddess heals the ocean and islands of the blight.
Finding a deserted island to beach the raft on and regroup, it is there that Moana finds the remains of Tautai Vasa’s raft, indicating that he and those with him were killed by Nalo before they could reach Motufetu. Her morale restored, and with Loto having repaired their raft with materials from Tautai Vasa’s, they head for Motufetu, with the plan being for Maui to raise the island, then Moana will touch it, breaking the curse. They confront Te Kā, who Moana manages to outsmart in order to make it past Te Fiti’s barrier islands. Moana is thrown off her boat and is nearly killed by the lava demon until Maui suddently returns.
